Advanced Foam created numerous foam parts for the crashed spaceship featured in Planet of the Apes (2001). All the foam parts were fabricated in our facilities and had to be taken to the Mojave Desert, where the scenes were shot. The final product ended up being equivalent to a 10-story building tilted at about 30 degrees.

All the foam parts were fabricated in our facilities and had to be taken to the Mojave Desert, where the scenes were shot. There were seven truckloads worth of pinnacles alone. Each of the pinnacles were nearly 100 feet long. The final product ended up being equivalent to a 10-story building tilted at about 30 degrees. It was a real challenge because the footings had been placed in the sand nearly a month before the pinnacles were put in. There was absolutely no room for error.

Sculpting is not Advanced Foam’s forte, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help the process along. In the case of the five-foot-high knight chess figures, we first machine-cut the horse side and front profiles, then they were shaped by the customer and returned to us for cementitious coating. A full 32-piece chess set was produced for a Honda commercial.

As part of a campaign to promote the Nissan Cube Advanced Foam built ten of these 6′ x 6′ x 6′ structures, with cutouts to resemble the car’s rounded, asymmetrical windows. Half-inch-thick heat-formed acrylic windows were placed inside before the tops were added. All exterior surfaces were Polycoated before finishing by the customer.
